“Whenever this Scripture is recited Great Compassion is with us and we are searching for it within ourselves.”
– The Scripture of Avalokiteshwara Bodhisattva
The temple
The Wallowa Buddhist Temple serves since 2002 as a small contemplative refuge both for those in Northeast Oregon and beyond who are interested in Buddhist meditation and practice, and for monks and members of the lay congregation of our Order who wish to come for individual spiritual retreats.
The temple also serves a small local congregation and is part of the life of our wider Wallowa County community.
The Wallowa Buddhist Temple depends entirely upon donations for its continued existence. All of its services and activities are offered without charge.
Our practice
The Wallowa Buddhist Temple follows the Serene Reflection Meditation tradition of Buddhism, also known as Soto Zen in Japanese, and Caodong Chan in Chinese.
The monks and temple are affiliated with the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives.
The monks
Reverend Meido Tuttle (right) and Reverend Clairissa Beattie (left) are the two monastic residents of the Wallowa Buddhist Temple. Rev. Meido is a disciple of the late Rev. Master Jiyu-Kennett, and Rev. Clairissa is a disciple of Rev. Meido.
